We celebrated the 1920's on Wednesday in class. Our classroom was transformed into a museum of student created projects. The day was was filled with learning, laughter, and dancing the Charleston (YES they did, ask them)! It's one of my favorite lessons to teach all year. I was even dressed as a Flapper! Students created projects based from a menu of options including a scrapbook comparing the 1920's to today, a monopoly board, a poster describing the best/worst times, and sports and heroes. Two groups of students performed the Charleston, one group performed a Jazz song, two boys dressed as 1920's gangsters, and another group of students performed a skit. Overall, it was a wonderful day! Here is a link to the movie slideshow I created in case you want to watch a short clip of the day. I will be holding an office hours study session for the upcoming test with students online on Thursday March 1st from 6-8 PM. I hope students take advantage of the opportunity using an amazing program called Think Binder. What is "office hours"? ThinkBinder is here to change the way you study with your peers. We have re-imagined the study group environment around a simple, focused set of tools to allow you to work more efficiently. How? Students can go to http://thinkbinder.com/ and click the "I have a group code" link. Enter the group code: 6ZRR They were the first African American aviators in the United States Armed Forces. These brave men overcame segregation and prejudice to become one of the most highly respected fighter groups of World War II. The Tuskegee Airmen’s achievements, together with the men and women who supported them, paved the way for full integration of the U.S. Military. In January, Lucas Films, will premiere its highly anticipated movie Red Tails, an epic story about these heroic pilots who despite tremendous adversity flew with distinction and gained the admiration and respect of the bomber squadrons they were bound to protect. Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum in conjunction with the Allegheny Intermediate Unit the Penn Hills School District and the Daniel B. Matthews Historical Society, will present a panel consisting of national and local historians and several members of the Tuskegee Airmen. Help us close out African American History Month with an engaging presentation and discussion about this inspiring group of aviators on February 28, 2012 during lunch Period 7 with a web stream and online chatroom. Currently there are over 4,300 students that will be participating in this event and over 60 schools nationwide. This will be an amazing opportunity to learn from wonderful speakers and true American Heroes. There is a homework calendar on this website. I will post homework in addition to the homework posted on the board. There is NO way they do not know what the homework is. I also plan a few weeks ahead so they actually could see the homework for the entire month of February :) Here is the link for the homework. I am offering a movie during lunch option (days FAB) if students want to sign up. The movie's will correspond with United States history curriculum that I am teaching in class. For example- next week we start World War I and we will be watching a World War I film during lunch next week. They will all be rated PG or PG-13 (Absolutely No R ratings). If students want to sign up there is a sign up sheet posted outside my classroom. It is completely optional and a first come first serve.
